Back to School with Shawnee Springs! – August 2024 Update
Happy August! What an exciting summer it has been so far. We love seeing all the families in and out of the market, whether they are just stopping in on their way to vacation or live right down the road and need something for dinner. The summer fun is not over yet!
July was a great month for us as we introduced more produce to the market; most notably our Red Haven and Donut Peaches grown right down the road in Cross Junction at Whitacre Family Farms! We also introduced produce like okra, varieties of peppers like Thai Chili, Sweet Banana, Cayenne, more local blackberries, nectarines, plums, and more!
Other produce available at the market: Honeycrisp apples, watermelon, cantaloupe, squash/zucchini & cucumbers, onions, potatoes, strawberries, blueberries, corn, broccoli & cauliflower, spring onion, and garlic. Come check it all out!
Looking for bulk produce to hold you over for a while? We have the following options for 1/2 bushels and bushels:
- Red Haven Peaches – $42 1/2 bushels; $72 bushels
- Green Beans – $20 1/2 bushels; $35 bushels
- Canning Tomatoes – $20/box (1/2 bushel)

August Holidays
No major holidays to note for August, but there will be a lot going on in Virginia and the surrounding counties throughout the month! This weekend, Friday, August 2nd through Sunday, August 4th is the state of Virginia’s Sales Tax holiday. You can learn more about what is eligible through a quick Google search or on the Virginia Department of Taxation website, so you and your family are prepared.Â
These next few weeks will also be important for families to start a new daily routine: adjusting to a sleep schedule, saving enough time for breakfast, packing lunches, and getting out the door before school and work! Along with the fresh produce you can find at the market, we also carry items that are perfect for you or your child’s breakfast or lunch. Items like apple sauce, jams and jellies or fruit butters, chips & salsa, peanuts from Plantation Peanuts, condiments for your sandwiches or to use as dips, salad dressings, and more!

Here are the important back to school dates for the counties surrounding Cross Junction.
For our friends in Virginia:Â Winchester Public Schools begins on Monday, August 12th. Shenandoah County Public Schools follows on Tuesday, August 13th. Frederick County’s Transition Day is Wednesday, August 14th with all students returning on Thursday, August 15th, and Clarke County Public Schools begins the following week on Tuesday, August 20th.
Over the state line in West Virginia: Berkeley County and Hampshire County Schools both begin on Monday, August 19th, and Morgan County Schools begin the following day on Tuesday, August 20th.

Beer Tastings
There are just 4 Beer Tastings left for the summer season! We hope you can join us on Friday, August 9th and Friday, August 23rd for 10 great selections of beverages chosen by our amazing Senseny Road team. Each week features an array of beers alongside a few other options of hard ciders, canned cocktails, or malt beverages. Here are some of the great options we had in July:

Fall Events
We recently announced 2 pick-your-own pumpkin events that we will be hosting at Whitacre Family Farms! The first event will be held on Saturday, September 28th.
The second event will be the following weekend on Saturday, October 5th.
Both events will begin at 10 a.m. and will run until 5 p.m. The address is 2411 Whitacre Road, Whitacre (Cross Junction), VA 22625.
A great question we received that is important to know: yes, all well-behaved dogs will be allowed at the farm! Please remember to keep your furry friends leashed in respect to the farm and other attendees. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any other questions.
