A Heart Behind Shawnee Springs Market

Shawnee Springs Market would not be what it is today without my mom, Lisa Whitacre Johnson. When she returned to the family business in 1987 to help open the new market on Rt. 522, she brought far more than an extra set of hands. She arrived with a fresh perspective, a contagious energy, and a deep love for agriculture that had been woven into her life since childhood.

From the beginning, Lisa had a natural gift for connecting with people. Customers didn’t just stop by for produce — they came because she made them feel welcome, remembered their families, and treated every interaction as a chance to build community. Under her influence, Shawnee Springs quickly grew from a simple roadside stand into a gathering place where neighbors shared stories, enjoyed hot meals, and felt part of something rooted in tradition.

Her vision shaped every corner of the market. She championed fresh, local produce long before it became a trend, and she poured her heart into creating a place where quality, hospitality, and family values were non-negotiable. Lisa’s leadership wasn’t loud or showy; it was steady, thoughtful, and grounded in her belief that good food and good people make a community stronger.

Today, the spirit of Shawnee Springs is a direct reflection of Lisa’s influence. Her legacy lives in every customer who feels at home, every employee who feels part of our family, and every generation that will continue to build on the foundation she created.
